Don’t Micromanage the Party Music

I firmly believe that if you’re booking a DJ, you don’t need a playlist – just let them get on with it. Otherwise, you might as well use an iPod or iPad. With a band, though, it’s nice to see a proposed setlist in advance to get a feel for their vibe and ensure it aligns with the mood you’re going for.

Trust the Professionals

DJs and live bands are professionals who have spent years reading crowds, curating music, and understanding how to build energy throughout the evening. While it’s fine to give a few do-not-play songs or mention a couple of must-haves, trying to control every track kills the flow and can make the entertainment feel stiff or unnatural.

Let the Energy Build Naturally

Good music is about progression. Trust your entertainers to read the room and adjust accordingly. A wedding or event should have its natural ebbs and flows—don’t expect a packed dance floor during dinner or emotional speeches. Let the pros create moments that build organically, culminating in the party atmosphere you’re dreaming of.

Collaborate – don’t Control

Instead of handing over a full playlist, have a conversation with your DJ or band leader about your vision and preferences. Share genres you love, artists you enjoy, or even a few meaningful tracks. This collaborative approach helps them understand your style without restricting their ability to work their magic.
